Identification and preparation of girls
Feb 3, 2022
update
Over 32 girls turned up expressing their interests in undergoing the apprenticeship in various areas of skills training. E.g. hair dressing, tailoring, catering, painting houses, metal fabrication and welding, tye and dye; and agribusiness. Five (5) women/girls have so far been identified as per our target for the initiative project: 2 tailoring all have dropped out of school; 2 are adolescent mothers and looking to see how to care for themselves and children sustainably. We organised a 2 hour session with the girls and women, speaking to them words of encouragement, focusing them towards self reliance and sharing some opportunities they can persue since all cannot be supported. I have reached out to various business owners (over 35) requesting them to provide a little of their time to give forward and help train at least one young woman in their trade and contribute to development of our nation. The concept and model approach interested most of them. However, they require that the trainee should be able to contribute to their lunch and be able to transport herself to the business premises. They also want to be paid so that they can concentrate to train these girls over a period of 4-6 months. On average, they want 300,000= per month per woman/girl. Some as we look for these resources, we are drafting an MoU between AWOR and the Business owners on their engagement in providing apprenticeship. So far 2 girls have got placements in Soroti and Kumi district pending supporting resources for transport and feeding; those doing tailoring need some materials which is not yet successfully mobilized, startup kits not yet mobilized.
