When Freedom Comes with Blind Spots

I’ve often thought about how we chase freedom, relief, and the absence of discomfort—without fully understanding the consequences. I was reminded of this story recently:
…When the baboons and monkeys heard that the man who used to chase them away from the maize field had died, they erupted in celebration. Finally, no more running, no more fear—they could enjoy the maize without interference. They thought they were free.
But the following year, there was no maize. That’s when the painful truth hit them: the man they celebrated wasn’t the enemy—they had misunderstood. He wasn’t just a threat; he was the farmer who grew the food they depended on.
This story hit differently for me as I reflected on mental health. Often, in life, we push away challenges, discomfort, or responsibilities because we see them as obstacles. We long for the “freedom” of avoidance, thinking it will bring relief.
But sometimes, those very challenges—those difficult people, those tough jobs, those strict routines—are the structures supporting our growth, stability, or even happiness.
As millennials navigating a world of instant gratification, side hustles, and the constant pressure to “do it all,” it’s easy to mistake relief for progress. We can end up celebrating the absence of discomfort while losing sight of what truly sustains us—our discipline, our support systems, our purpose.
The lesson is simple but powerful: discomfort often has purpose. Fear can teach us caution. Rules can protect us. Boundaries, even strict ones, can nourish growth. And the “Man” we resist today may be the very person, habit, or system that ensures our future wellbeing.
So the next time you find yourself wishing someone or something away because it feels inconvenient, pause and reflect. Ask: is this really a threat—or is it a support I’m failing to see? Mindful awareness, gratitude, and perspective are mental health practices in themselves. They help us navigate life without sacrificing long-term resilience for short-term comfort.
Because the truth is, freedom without insight can be empty. And sometimes, celebration comes too early.
