When Financial Circumstances Hold Back a Dream

There are some dreams that are not impossible because we lack the ability to achieve them. Sometimes, they feel impossible simply because we cannot afford the cost of reaching them.

I am a housewife and a mother, and for a long time, I have been living a life where everyone else’s needs naturally come before my own. I love my family and I value my responsibilities, but somewhere inside me, there is still a woman who wants to learn, grow, meet people from different parts of the world, share her voice, and experience something that is truly for herself.

I recently experienced something that made me realize how strongly finances can stand between a woman and an opportunity.

I was approached regarding a youth leadership festival taking place in Paris this October. I was genuinely excited about the possibility of participating. For a moment, I thought, perhaps this could be my chance to step outside my usual responsibilities, learn internationally, meet young leaders, and bring that experience back into my life and community.

But then reality came in.

The available options involved costs that I simply could not afford on my own. As much as I wanted to go, my financial circumstances made it impossible for me to commit to a self-funded or partially funded place.

And I had to let that opportunity remain a dream.

That experience stayed with me.

Not because I believe I am entitled to an international opportunity, but because I realized how many capable women may be standing exactly where I am standing — with the motivation, the experience, the willingness to learn, and the courage to try, but without the financial means to cross the distance between an opportunity and themselves.

I don’t want my story to be about asking someone to feel sorry for me.

I want it to be about being seen.

World Pulse has become one of the few places where I feel that a woman’s voice can be heard beyond her circumstances. Here, women share their struggles, their dreams, their fears, their achievements and the things they are still trying to become. The community reminds us that we are not alone.

I have been fortunate to become an active member of this community, and I now have 17 World Pulse badges. Most recently, one of my stories was spotlighted and I received a Storyteller Badge. These recognitions may seem small to someone looking from the outside, but to me they mean something much deeper.

They remind me that the woman behind the responsibilities still has a voice.

She still has dreams.

She still has something to contribute.

And now, I am hoping to find a way forward.

There are international opportunities and fully funded youth and leadership conferences where participation is possible for people who cannot independently carry the cost of international travel. One such opportunity I am currently hoping for is a fully funded conference in Switzerland.

I know that selection is competitive.

I know there are many talented people applying.

And I know that nobody owes me a place.

But I also believe that sometimes opportunities are found through connections — through someone who knows an organization, a foundation, an NGO, a women-led initiative, a mentor, or a program that another woman has never heard of.

So I am sharing this story here not to ask my World Pulse sisters for money, but to ask for something that may be even more valuable:

A connection.

If you know of a legitimate NGO, foundation, women-led organization, youth organization, fellowship, sponsorship program, or fully funded international opportunity that supports women who face financial barriers to participation, I would be deeply grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

If you have personally received support to attend an international conference or leadership program, I would love to hear how you found that opportunity.

If you know someone who believes that financial circumstances should not be the only thing deciding who gets to sit at an international table, I would be grateful for that connection too.

I am not looking for someone to change my life for me.

I am looking for a door.

If someone can show me where that door is, I am willing to knock.

Being a housewife and a mother does not mean that my ambitions have disappeared.

Having financial limitations does not mean that I have nothing to offer.

And needing support does not mean that I am weak.

Sometimes strength is admitting that we cannot do everything alone.

I want to give myself an opportunity to experience something beyond the pressure of everyday responsibilities — even if it is only for a few days. I want to sit among women and young leaders from different countries, listen to their stories, share mine, learn from them, and return home with a wider perspective and renewed energy.

I want to remember that I am a person with dreams, not only a person with responsibilities.

Maybe Paris was not my door.

Maybe Switzerland will be.

Maybe it will be another country, another conference, another fellowship, or an opportunity I haven’t even discovered yet.

I don’t know.

But I am choosing not to stop looking.

And perhaps that is why I am writing this here — because World Pulse taught me that sometimes a story does not need to have all the answers.

Sometimes a story simply needs to reach the right person.

I am ready to learn.

I am ready to work for the opportunity.

I just need a chance to reach it.

Maybe one connection can turn a dream that feels financially impossible into a possibility.

And maybe this time, I won’t have to choose between my responsibilities and the chance to do something meaningful for myself.

Maybe there is still a door waiting for me.
