When Absence Leaves a Mark

I recently heard a story that hit me hard. Tenge’s father disappeared from his life for nine whole years. Nine years. During that time, it was just Tenge and his mother. She poured her heart into raising him, guiding him, and building the foundation he needed to thrive. Today, Tenge is a superstar—resilient, accomplished, and shining.

And now… his father wants to come back. After nearly a decade of absence, he’s suddenly ready to reclaim a place in Tenge’s life. 🤦‍♂️

It made me pause and reflect on the invisible scars left by absent parents—particularly fathers. Millennials like us, juggling careers, relationships, and self-discovery, often carry echoes of childhood absence, abandonment, or neglect. It impacts our mental health in ways we sometimes ignore: trust issues, self-doubt, and the constant question—“Am I enough?”

Tenge’s story is a reminder. We cannot control others, but we can control the legacy we leave. For fathers—or anyone in a caregiving role—financial struggles or personal hardships are never an excuse to walk away from the people who depend on you the most. Kids remember. Kids feel. And sometimes, the ones you leave behind are the ones whose support, love, or even forgiveness you may need in the future.

Mental health is deeply tied to emotional presence. Being physically absent may seem like just a gap in your schedule, but emotionally absent is a wound that can last a lifetime. For those of us who grew up with gaps in parental presence, learning to recognize the impact and care for our own mental well-being is crucial. Therapy, open conversations, and building intentional support systems aren’t luxuries—they’re lifelines.

So here’s my takeaway: never underestimate the power of your presence. Money comes and goes. Opportunities fade. But the imprint of love, consistency, and emotional availability lasts forever.

Your kids—or the people who depend on you—don’t need perfection. They just need you.
