This year international women's day theme is \" #Break The Bias\"! The major reason this theme was selected is for everyone to look within inside itself to identify a very common Bias and Break it. we all have our biases! Is it Racial Bias, or it's gender bias, could it be equality bias or which bias are you thinking of? Which ever bias it is, we all got common ground!
I am vehemently using this theme#Break the Bias\" to sincerely advocate for the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities into our sociaties and into our cultures. PWDs have been marginalized for a longer period and we all need to break the Bias.
As a PWDs myself, I am sharing my own experience. As I speak straight from day one and up to now there is no any single day that I don't face descrimination or descrinated against. Many times I have broke down and cried in my room why why why?
IIt's started at the schools, when your colleagues think you are not good enough to play with; this at some point made me coiled back in my shell. So at a very tender age I have learnt to be my own comfort. I became very good without friends to avoid the intimidation that comes with friendship.
This attitude actually got into me so much that in this my adult age I don't trust friendship or making friend. I always think they are there to use me as in person and not the friendship. If you see me with a very serious friend, then that friend must have touch my heart.
When it comes to love relationship or intimate relationships it's the worst. My last broke up relationship was hectic. After I kept all effort to make it work, the Bias broke it. Family members of my boyfriend came in with the stigmatism of disability.
\"We are not allowing you to marry an handicap\" says mother of my boyfriend. What hurt me most was the using of the word \"handicap\"! Handicap? I questioned her, please what do you mean by an handicap? With my thought provocative questions I got to learnt about their intentions. They were never in agreement from the start that their son get into a relationship with me. It was the boy all alone, hoping they will have a change of mind. Now, the short of the matter is we broke up!
The Bias broke us before we could found out. The culture system in African makes it very really difficult to integrate PWDs. Even as few are still aware and are breaking the bias, the Gap is still big!
The employment sector is the worst in term of Bias. Immediately at the door the interviewer see any white cane, hearing aid or a crutches, my dear please forget it. They have decided before you even took the seat ha! The rest of the matter is just a delay tactics to beat time!
Then they begin to sympathize with you. We don't need sympathy, we need empathy. Put yourself in ours shoes and walk our walk, only then will you appreciate us.
Why should a graduate be denied job because of his/her disability? Break that Bias!
What are you Breaking this month of March?
As part of this international women's day, I am determine to break the Bias regarding disability. It will start with my own personal initiatives. I am placing myself in the Frontline, if any person, institution, organization or any setting want to see my abilities come up. Let's do it! Is it a virtual conference you want to organize, put me in see me break the bias, is it an opportunity you have put me in and see me break the bias. Anything that is not criminal bring it and see me break the bias.
PWDs women's says let's Break The Bias and I am their Gang Leader. On this note I wish all women an Advance Happy International women's day.
