What excites me most about web 2.0 is that it provides us women the airtime and space to voice out our challenges and strength, form networks and mobilize for social change.
The media, both print and electronic portray women as sex objects instead of partners in progress with men.The reason for this is not far fetched.Women occupy just 1% of the top positions in global media, giving way to only 16% of global news stories focus on women. In addition about half of all news stories reinforce gender stereotypes and only 19% of all experts cited in global news are women.
Coupled with the insignificant percentage of women at decision making positions,no media can portray us more than our own medium-web 2.0.With the use of web 2.0,we will have time and space to call our own, voice our challenges, share and learn from women across the globe with a view to finding interventions to our challenges and imbibing best practices. But,most importantly to celebrate ourselves for we can not wait for anyone to count our blessings.Like the agama lizard,we will nod our heads in praise of our successes.
I look forward to using web 2.0 to tell the world about women in my community...the voiceless. They are only to be seen not heard.Web 2.0 is their voice to the world.
