UWOPA to promote gender bills to end gender based violence against women As one way of ending violence against women, Uganda parliamentary women have committed to address online gender based violence against women and women human rights defenders. During a breakfast meeting held at Golden Tulip hotel in Ntinda yesterday , the chairperson Uganda parliamentary women association (UWOPA) Hon. Sarah Opendi said that as women leaders and legislatures they are committed to promoting gender bills and also advocate for access to justice for victims and survivors of gender based violence .
The bills include marriage bill, reproductive technology bill, market bill among others. Opendi revealed that there is a need for creating a safe environment and favourable conditions for women human rights defenders for the best impact of their work. Mary Harriet Lamunu the executive director Uganda women parliamentary association said that during covid-19 lockdown they received a number of complaints from women over torture and violence.
Kugonza Brenda the executive director women human rights defenders Network Uganda said that as women rights defenders they are suffering both online and physical violence which hinders the success of their work.
