Update on Finding Abilities in Disabilities

It is almost 3 months into this initiative.

The idea is to train girls living with disabiliities in tailoring so they can have skills that will empower them to earn some money instead of making a career in beginning that had more harm than good. Begging exposes them to SGBV, it exposes them to ritual killers and other harmful practices. It limits them from reaching their potentials and they become parmanently dependent on others for their needs.

A skill such as tailoring would give them opportunities to tap their creativity and critical thinking and also serve as a means of getting financial Independence.

This program is for girls with disabiliities in Potiskum, Yobe state in Nigeria. The strategy is to train them and give them sewing machines with basic sewing tools to set them up after the training.

The target was 20 girls, but presently the number dropped to 15 because the girls use manual wheelchairs and have to wheel for long distances to get to the training center.

The training started with learning sewing terminologies and knowing parts of the sewing machine, how to take measurements, different patterns, cutting of patterns etc.

After 3 months each of them can make simple blouses, baby dresses, skirts and buba  blouses ( a traditional type of blouse.

How you can be part of this?

With a $100 , you can provide for a girl  with all that she needs to start up a sewing business.
