An unconscious bias is a prejudice or stereotype individuals hold about certain groups of people that they aren’t consciously aware of having.
This subject area isnt new to me but something I ve not given much taught too , its one that provokes deeper introspection though , because I grew up and still live in a multiple ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious society I have always embraced all of humanity, our differences were celebrated rather than divided us.
Touching on this subject caused me to look into it a little deeper and I realized so much of it exists around us, but we are not mindful of it. Because I don't work in the co-operate world, a lot of the bias that could exist there doesn't personally affect me, but I may experience it in dealing with customer service or in a general setting.
Things like ageism, beauty bias, bias based on your financial status, your ethnicity, your skin tone, etc all exist and may at times be unconsciously or consciously exercised if not held in check
Sometimes even the way we see people with disabilities, not affording them equal opportunities ,because we assume their capabilities
I live by the strong belief that God created us all in his image and likeness , I see us all as one human race ,regardless of our difference . But that may not exclude me from having exercised some form of unconcious bias towards another person , as would happen with all of us .
One way to avoid biases would be to be very conscious of them ,to be aware they exist , I never realized Heightism was even a thing and how it could affect even ones employment or salary .
So indeed I have come away more conscious and aware and especially in todays rapidly changing society we have to be conscious .
I found the folllowing article to be very imformative on the subject
