Two Eyes and a Brain

After watching the training material on Implicit Bias, I have come to the following conclusions

  • As is rightly said, said in the bible (the holy book), "the eyes are the window to our souls". In as much as how we perceive things in our environment is important first by how we see and experience them, the onus also lies on us to use our brains for the most part of the work. We need to make the efforts to meditate, reflect and analyze whatever it is we encounter so that we do not miss the important message.
  • Intentionality is required in mindfulness, and mindfulness aids us to notice our person bias and to deal with them as we engage with other people.
  • These unconcious biases we have were largely built in the communities we grew up in. The first step to overcoming them is acknowledging that they exist.

In conclusion, I'd say, sometimes you would see the monkey not because you were focusing on it but because you were excited about the bigger experience. This in itself could be a bias, my bias to deal with. Be concerned about the big picture but also calm enough to notice the tiny details.
