Toxic Work Spaces

Henrietta Nonye Odey

He described me as being 'too passionate' like it was a bad thing.

Some years ago, I had a supervisor at work who complained about how passionate I am.

In his words "direct it else where, it's not needed here".

He behaved like it was a problem. He'd often say;

"Why are you so concerned about them?"

"Leave things as they are."

"Why do you want to help them?

"Why are you asking these questions?"

"Why is this your problem?"

"Why can't you pretend, you didn't see it?"

"Why?"

"When you came this is how you met things, why do you want to change it?"

"Who are you?"

So he'd often report me to our second in command.

I was a torn in his flesh because in my small corner I fought for what I believed was right.

That in itself was TROUBLE to him.

I worked to right the wrong, him and others constantly did to those they were meant to serve.

That was my crime.

I was employed to ease the lives of the most vulnerable and when I found out there were inconsistencies, siphoning and falsification of documents, I refused to be a part of it.

In my short time of being there, I served with my heart and might.

One of my colleagues once said, paraphrasing "Henrietta, I love your zeal. You work smart and this makes us finish our tasks excellently and timely too, but it makes the bosses assign more responsibilities. Could you please stop?"

So, I had a supervisor and some colleagues who preferred I changed my work ethics.

It was the most toxic workplace I've had to be but I'm glad to say in my short time there, I made a difference, especially in the lives of the most vulnerable.

I discovered later on, that the bosses were in on it from the beginning in fact they ordered it. When I found out I was glad my contract was coming to an end.

I couldn't be part of something that killed and destroyed that which it was meant to serve.

I hope your weekend was splendid?

Have a phenomenal week.
