These Millineals!

My stories for the better part would always centre around myself, my work and people I interact with on a daily basis. That's because inspiration comes from what's within or what's around us. And so today I couldn't help wonder about the young people I've worked with, bought stuff from, engaged in one way or another including the ones I'd be mentoring in the life skills sessions offered by my organization, Skills Maishani.

These youngins, famously baptized as 'Millenials' most of whom are born in the year 1990 going upwards are a curious case study. They're literally generation shakers. I mean they were born in the Digital Era where technology advances faster than they can blink. Even for those in the early 90s bracket who have experienced both old and new technology have adapted and embraced the change.

Technology aside, why are they generation shakers?

I bet we all know why. This isn't a piece meant to trash them as most people do. Let's look at the bigger picture. We have seen the social disruption that has taken place. Some allege it's the upbringing by more woke parents, some think it's because of westernisation,  urbanisation, the gradual decline of culture and tradition or a cocktail of all the above and more. 🤷🏿‍♀️

In my opinion, they were born in to a world that's relatively stable and free from upheavals. A world characterized by a focus on human rights and equality. A liberal world where people's freedoms are more or less respected making it much easier to share views and ideas right from the nuclear family. There's less 'children ought to be seen not heard' mantras going around in urban areas. A young person is not seen as labour for their father's large farm or as a maiden ripe for marriage to bring fortune for their family but as an individual with likes, dislikes, interests and dreams.

And even in the rural setting where some cultural harmful practices continue to be carried out, there's a wind of change passing through with youths who went through the very same things clamouring for change every opportunity they get. They desire to migrate to urban areas to get an opportunity to be themselves, to have a voice and to be heard.

And they make themselves known! We see them in their fashion and style, their love for anything tech and social media. Don't get me started on this! They're open minded, opinionated and confident. They're unafraid to delve in to anything unknown which makes them a tad careless. Did I mention free spirited and care free? Being around them, I have felt the energy they exhue.

Nevertheless, they're still young and in need of guidance about their social environment and how the real world works. Therefore let's keep showing them how to be free spirited but responsible. Care free but with values and principles.

These are the generation shakers. They have changed how society looks at themselves. They have made communities change their outlook of life. They say the youth are the mirrors of society.

Millennials truly are. 🙂
