I want to be seen for my ability, not for disability
My Name is Deborah Ojuade, I'm person with Disability. The nature of my disability is called cerebral palsy. I grew up with a single mother, I got rejected by my father because of my disability. I started walking at the age of ten years old it was not easy for me,I got enrolled in school, to be precise I went to school of people without disabilities .I could vividly remembered during break time at school when I was just in nursery 1 ,my classmates bullied me by pulling out my hair and beating me up;it was unforgettable day of my life up to this moment. I've been stigmatismatize and discriminated at school, bus station, and in my community because of my disability, But it doesn't stop me from having a dream and pursuing my dreams.Â
I'm a ambitious person with a vision and mission not just for myself alone ,but for the world I believes in women and men because both gender has a great potential that needs to be unleashed together for a peaceful world. I've experience a lot of challenges ,in times of financial support, it's very difficult for me and my mum, I mean she is the only paying all the bills, she has no one to assist her except for God up till this time, during my National diploma at Yaba College of Technology I asked my hod to give me time to write during exams because I couldn't write fast as the pace of others in my class ,but he said no because I wasn't sitting on wheelchair. I had to beg God to make the time run on a slow pace which he did for me.Â
I hope to impact people's lives positively in using my voice and talent to advocate for a peaceful world.I want to change people perspective about person with Disability that they have ability in them if we help and develop them out their potential. To help stop discrimination against people with disabilities and women, women need to treated with equality. They should be given a place in political affairs, I hope to develop the youths in leadership role so they could be a good and responsible leader. My dreams is for person with Disability have accessibility and inclusiveness in every aspects of their lives and for people to treat them well, also for the world to be peaceful.Â
I've learned to be independent myself, because a lot of people has rejected and disappointed me due to my disability, it's not easy being different in my community & class, I usually find my strength in the bible, I usually write quotes, I'm a youtuber and poet.Â
I've started always wanted to have my own non governmental organisation where I can help person with Disability and youth by development. Most people usually ask if I go for physiotherapy because whenever I sit down or stand people hardly notice except only if I walk or talk,my mum usually massage me and I usually exercise to reduce the stiffness of my joints .I'm grateful for God mercy and grace upon me.Â
