The World Pulse 50: What Storytelling Means to Me

STORY TELLING AS A TOOL FOR POSITIVE CHANGE AND INCLUSION

Change has never truly happened when we stay silent. In this quest for change, some voices have thundered literally. For some of us, our pens like the mighty sword continue to penetrate barriers, making many people to pause, think and take action.

Stories have the power to impact those who listen to or read through it and the power of a personal story can never be underestimated in this quest for positive change. It has therefore been an incredible honour, to use storytelling, especially my personal stories, to fight for positive change and inclusion.

Where my physical voice cannot be loud enough, storytelling has been that trumpet blast I need for my voice to be heard. Through storytelling, I have been able to bring others into the realities of my world and those like me. The feedback I get from each story I share, especially from those who were moved to action after reading a particular story of mine remains an encore to me to keep telling my truth through stories.

It goes without saying, nothing beats inclusion and representation matters. Often times, it takes just that one single powerful voice – story- to set the ball rolling and that is why I write stories, to change the narrative, one story at a time!

It is both an incredible and at the same time, humbling moment to be selected amongst an impressive group of amazing storytellers as one of the top 50 and this recognition will not only be cherished, but is one I hope will continue to sharpen my pen and storytelling skills to keep that fight for inclusion going, one story at a time.
