After seven years of running a digital agency and managing discovery calls, you develop a sort of "sixth sense."
When you are younger, you are hungry for every single deal. You overlook the subtle warning signs because you just want to close the client and hit your revenue targets. But after a few years of dealing with scope creep, late payments, and chaotic boundaries, you realize that losing a bad client is actually a massive win for your business.
Now, I don't need a month-long trial period to know if a client is going to be a dream or a nightmare. I can usually spot the warning signs within the first 10 minutes of a Zoom call.
If you are an agency owner, freelancer, or consultant, here are the non-negotiable red flags I watch out for right out of the gate.
1. "We need this done yesterday."
There is a massive difference between a business with an urgent, time-sensitive launch and a business that operates in permanent chaos.
If a prospect opens the meeting by pressuring you about instant turnaround times before they've even clearly explained the project requirements, it tells you two things:
They have poor internal planning.
They expect your team to sacrifice their weekends to make up for their lack of organization.
High-performing systems require strategy, mapping, and execution time. When someone demands immediate results without respecting the process, it's a fast track to team burnout.
2. "Our last agency didn't know what they were doing."
If a prospect spends the first 5 minutes of a call completely tearing down their previous agency, web developer, or marketer, pay close attention.
Sometimes, they genuinely worked with a bad provider. But if everyone they’ve worked with in the past was "clueless" or "terrible," the common denominator is usually the client. It often means they don't listen to expert advice, have unrealistic expectations, or refuse to hand over the necessary access and trust for a professional to do their job.

5. Vague Goals and Deflected Metrics
When I ask, "What does success look like for this project over the next 6 months?" and the answer is completely vague—like "We just want to go viral" or "We just want more sales" without any baseline data—it's a red flag.
Even worse is when they refuse to share their current analytics or conversion data because it's "too messy." If they can't define the target, you can never hit it. And when the project ends, they will blame you for not achieving a goal they never clearly defined in the first place.
The Big Takeaway
Your time, your energy, and your team's peace of mind are the most valuable assets your business owns. Saying "no" to a misaligned client leaves your schedule wide open to say "yes" to an enterprise partner who respects your boundaries, values your frameworks, and pays your worth.
Trust your gut in those first 10 minutes. It’s almost always right.
