The Future Has a Place for My Voice

Hellen Ndanu

There was a time when I thought powerful voices belonged only to powerful people. I thought a voice had to come from a big office, a television studio, or someone with money and influence. I looked at my own life, my struggles, and my unanswered questions and wondered what my voice could possibly change. I was just a young woman trying to survive, dream, study, and build a better future.

But life has taught me something I did not know then: a voice does not become powerful because of where it comes from. It becomes powerful when it refuses to remain silent. I have known what it feels like to have dreams that seem bigger than my circumstances. I have experienced moments when poverty made me question whether I would make it through school. There were times when giving up seemed easier than continuing, yet somewhere inside me, a small voice kept saying, “Keep going.”

At first, I did not understand the power of that voice. Then I started telling stories. I discovered that the experiences I once wanted to hide could become stories of hope. The pain I thought made me weak could connect me to another woman. The struggles I thought were mine alone were shared by women and girls I had never met. That is when I began to understand something beautiful: my story may begin with me, but it does not have to end with me.

Every time a woman tells the truth about her life, something changes. Perhaps the whole world does not stop and listen immediately, but somewhere, another woman hears her. Sometimes, that is where change begins—in a girl who realizes she is not alone, in a woman who finally decides to speak, or in someone who reads a story and thinks, “If she survived, maybe I can survive too.”

I think about the future often. I do not imagine it as something distant, waiting for powerful people to create it for us. I imagine the future being built every day—in the stories we share, the women we encourage, the girls we educate, the communities we serve, and the voices we choose to amplify. The future is already being written, and I believe women must be among those holding the pen.

For too long, many women have been left out of conversations that shape our societies. Decisions have been made about us without listening to us. Our pain has sometimes been ignored, our ideas dismissed, and our dreams treated as less important. But I believe the future must be different. A future for women cannot truly be built without women's voices.

I want a future where a girl from a struggling family does not believe that poverty has the final word over her life. I want a future where young women are given opportunities to learn, create, lead, and dream without apology. I want a future where a woman's story is not only heard when she is suffering but also celebrated when she is succeeding. I want a future where women support one another instead of competing for the little space we are given, and where together, we create bigger spaces for every woman to rise.

When women connect, something powerful happens. A woman in Kenya can share her story with a woman thousands of miles away. Their lives may be different, their languages may be different, and their journeys may be different, but somehow, they understand each other. One woman says, “I have been there too.” Another replies, “You are not alone.” Suddenly, a voice that once felt small becomes part of something much bigger.

That is the future I want to help build. Not a future where only a few women are heard, but one filled with many voices—the shy voices, the wounded voices, the young voices, the voices that have been ignored, and the voices that are still learning to speak. Every voice carries an experience, a dream, and a possibility for change.

I may not have money to change the whole world. I may not hold a powerful position, and I may not have all the answers. But I have a voice, and I have learned never to underestimate what a voice can do. A voice can tell the truth. It can challenge injustice. It can comfort someone who is hurting. It can inspire a dream. It can turn pain into purpose and travel farther than the person who first spoke it ever imagined.

As the future takes shape, I want my voice to be part of it. I want to continue writing, speaking, learning, and connecting with women whose lives remind me that change is not created by one person alone. We build it together—one story, one woman, and one voice at a time.

Perhaps one day, a young girl will read the stories we are sharing today and grow up believing that her voice belongs too. That is the future I imagine, and that is the future I want to help write. Because I have finally learned that my voice does not need permission to matter. It already does. And when women around the world bring their voices together, we do not just talk about the future—we become the women who shape it.
