Realizing women land rights

Participants had to choose between 4 bills we influence in senate: Alternative Land Dispute, National Lands Commission, Succession and Land Control Board.Participants settled on Alternative Land Dispute

Women form a majority in Virhembe sub location, Shibuye location, Shinyalu sub county, Kakamega county. Women are playing a significant role in the agricultural sector as producers and producers of food security. It is alarming to note that only a mere 3 per cent of Virhembe women own land.

Incidences of asset stripping and disinheritance have been on the rise with women being thrown out of their homes land grabbed and other properties stripped from them.

Due to lack of and limited awareness on land rights, as well as the importance of legal documents being lodged in court cases against perpetrators of such violations, the ability of widows and orphans to control and use land and other family assets has been threatened. It has further compounded in very high court filling and legal fees.

Yesterday we had a fruitful stakeholders meeting with grassroots women in relation to land, succession and inheritance with men leading the talk. We agreed to have next meeting the second week of September sensitization and training on Alternative Land Dispute and initiate a womens feminist movement " Women Watchdog Group".
