Pursing Education for Empowerment

Over the last 3 weeks that I've started my junior year in college, I've been giving a lot of thought to the many privileges I posses as an individual. One of the most obvious being my access to education, specifically the institution of higher education. As I read through my textbooks for school I'm reminded of how many people day in and day out are fighting just for the ability to stay alive. Whether that refers to food and clean water, protective shelter, affordable health care, or the right to be free from violence or assault. These are all basic human rights that I possess and that I take for granted every single day.

Listening to my professors and fellow classmates talk about some of the problems that are facing my country currently, I can't help but think of those who aren't in the classroom with us. Those very same people that we are discussing. And even more so, those people who we are not discussing. I keep thinking about the millions of people whose voices are silenced by the destruction of war, poverty, and illness. Also those that are held captive inside jails, prisons, and prisoner camps for actions not justified.

As I take notes from my readings, I begin to realize that the only way I'll truly be able to help those I think about is through pursing my education. If I continue to keep myself educated, and advocate for those without a voice, then maybe, some day, we will see change. Also, I'd much rather bring education to those who have none so that they can speak up and advocate for themselves! It's through my own education that I've been able to feel more confident and empowered. I truly wish the same feeling and knowIedge I possess for others in my country and around the world. Everyday I feel too tired to wake up and go to class or drive to work, I remind myself that I've been given the opportunity to expand my mind and earn my way in the world. I can't take this opportunity for granted. And it's my hope and prayers that one day I'll be able to help empower others through education.
