Partners for everything

Fatima, a 27-year-old woman from a Urban community in India, had four children and was struggling to provide for them. She wanted to use contraception to prevent further pregnancies, but her husband was opposed to the idea. He believed that it was the woman's duty to have as many children as possible, and he did not want to go against his culture and traditions.

Fatima knew that she needed to involve her husband in the decision-making process if she wanted to use contraceptives. She decided to attend a family planning awareness session organized by a local non-profit organization.

During the session, she learned about the different types of contraceptives available and their benefits. She also learned about the importance of involving decision-makers, such as husbands and community leaders, in the decision-making process.

With this newfound knowledge, Fatima decided to talk to her husband about family planning. She shared the information she had learned and explained why it was important for their family's well-being to use contraception. To her surprise, her husband listened attentively and was willing to consider using contraception.

Fatima and her husband visited the local health clinic, where they received counselling on family planning and chose a method that worked best for them. Over time, they began to see the benefits of spacing their children and were grateful for the decision they had made.

This story shows the importance of involving decision-makers, such as husbands and community leaders, in the family planning process. By addressing cultural and social norms and providing education and counselling, it is possible to change attitudes and increase the uptake of contraceptives in communities where family planning may be stigmatized.
