"Statistics South Africa reported almost 34 000 teenage pregnancies during 2020, with 660 of those being girls under the age of 13". - Stats SA
On this International Day of the Girl, we celebrate the strength and resilience of girls and young women around the world. We also recognize the challenges that many girls face, such as teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy is a prevalent problem in South Africa. One in four girls under the age of 18 will become pregnant, according to the Guttmacher Institute. This is a result of a number of factors, including poverty, lack of access to education and healthcare, and gender inequality.
Teenage pregnancy can have a devastating impact on girls' lives. It may result in social marginalization, poverty, and early school dropout. Additionally, it may raise a young woman's chance of developing sexually transmitted infections and difficulties during pregnancy and childbirth. Many South African girls are overcoming these obstacles, though. They are continuing their education, attending classes, and striving to improve their futures and those of their families.
To help these girls, we must do more. We must make investments in their healthcare and education and remove obstacles that stand in the way of them realizing their full potential.
Let's pledge to do everything in our power on this International Day of the Girl to make sure that all girls have the chance to live happy, healthy, and fulfilled lives.
