My Life

Once upon a time, on November 23, 1996, in a small town, I came into this world as the child of Mr. and Mrs. Berlyn-Kamara. I was born into a bustling household with five siblings, each of whom brought joy and noise into our lives. Life seemed full of promises and possibilities.

But tragedy struck our family on July 21, 2020. I witnessed the sudden departure of my eldest sibling, right before my eyes. It was a painful experience that left a void in our hearts that could never be filled. The loss of a loved one is an indescribable pain that changes a person forever.

To add to the hardships, things took a turn for the worse when I was in the 7th grade. My father disowned me, severing our connection and leaving me feeling abandoned and alone. I returned home from school one day to find that my mother had also left, forced out by my father due to her pregnancy with my younger brother. I was struck with the reality that my family was falling apart, and instability became a constant companion.

In the midst of this chaos, we suffered another devastating blow. My mom's sister succumbed to a chronic illness, leaving us heartbroken and grappling with the pain of loss once again. It felt like tragedy had become the unwelcome guest in our lives.

With nowhere else to turn, my mom and I moved between various households, seeking refuge with different aunties. These kind souls helped us as much as they could, offering us a roof over our heads and support during these tumultuous times. My mom worked odd jobs just to put food on the table for our family. Her determination and sacrifice were nothing short of inspiring.

High school became a different kind of struggle for me. I battled constant fainting spells that made me a target for bullies. The laughter and ridicule seemed never-ending, and at times, I came dangerously close to giving up. But within me burned a flicker of resilience and determination, pushing me forward to persevere despite the odds.

However, life's challenges seemed to have no end in sight. In 2017, my trust was shattered when my best friend, someone I believed would always protect and support me, betrayed that bond. I became a victim of a heinous act - rape. The pain and trauma I experienced during that time left me broken, questioning my worth and my place in this world.

As the years passed, the weight of all my struggles began to take a toll on my mental well-being. By mid-2020, I found myself slipping into a deep depression. Days blurred together, and the weight of it all nearly caused me to lose my sanity. It was in those darkest moments that I yearned for a glimmer of hope, desperate to break free from the grip of my circumstances.

Thankfully, amidst the darkness, I found rays of light from a few family members, especially my aunties, Amy Kay, Big Tenneh, Rakietu, Kadijay, and many others. Their unwavering support, love, and kindness acted as a lifeline, pulling me out of the depths of despair. They became my pillars of strength, guiding me towards healing and reminding me that I was not alone.

Today, as I reflect on the chapters of my life, I realize that it is through the darkest moments that we find our true strength. Each trial I faced, no matter how overwhelming, shaped me into the resilient person I have become. I am a survivor, not defined by the hardships I endured, but by the grace and love I found amidst the chaos.

Life may have dealt me a difficult hand, but I refuse to let the past dictate my future. I am determined to rise above the pain and use my experiences to advocate for change, to help others who may have walked a similar path. Through it all, I have found the courage to believe in myself and embrace the beauty of a life that is still unfolding.

And so, I stand here today, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead. For I know that within me lies a strength forged in the fire of adversity - a strength that will always guide me in writing the next chapter of my life, with hope, resilience, and unwavering determination.
