MY JOURNEY TO PULSE WORLD

My story is of young girl who graduated with a Mass communication degree from the University of Nigeria Nsukka and had gone on to do National Youth Service in the Northern part of the my country Nigeria but was amazed at how women in these area suffer greatly as a result of the patriarchal system in existence in the area.
I discovered that women in this area suffer a wide range of Gender Based Violence from early marriage, Polygamous marriage, VVF, Genital Mutilation to economic dependence etc. I was troubled on how people are being subjected to what I will describe as slavery and thus I started to seek ways to which I can help improve the live on these women in my own little way.
I started attending conferences and certificate courses that are gender related and Post Graduate Diploma in Gender Studies to learn on how best to improve the lives of these women in the northern part of my country first and women generally in my country, I started on this line because I had no professional experience so my best option is to tap from those who had experience such in their communities and were able to overcome the dilemma through these conferences and courses. It was in the process that I discovered THE WORLD PULSE through the UNIFEM of which I joined as a member since 2009.
Through the World Pulse, I have met amazing women with whom I have shared and exchanged very rewarding ideas and experience. Through this amazing community of women, I am able to take back to my community what ever experience I gain.
When the Voice of Our Future opportunity came out, I was properly motivated to be part of it by applying because it will offer me a wider opportunity to connect with more amazing women from different parts of the world with whom we can discuss on issues affecting women globally and equip me to lend my voice to the fight for gender equality.
This journey fits in to my personal vision of improving with the lives of women living in the northern part of my country Nigeria, to empower women to be economic independent, to educate them on their human rights of which I am trying to achieve through my present job as the gender officer in the organization I work with.
My personal vision of contributing to achieve a balanced society that is will be gender bias free, a society where gender will to not be a barrier to achieve one’s aim, a community where there is equal right to opportunities.
