MY JOURNEY
May 28, 2019
story
This girl was born into a polygamous family of five wives and 24 children. This meant misery and maltreatment as well as no education for me because I was, as the community believes am a merchandise, labourer in the farms, baby factory and a house keeper. My experience is no different from women within my community because cultural norms and taboos have made them become victims of polygamy and early motherhood. As a victim of unsafe abortion, I have been working with adolescent girls within my community on the dangers of this practice. Although I have started working with in school girls on these issues, I feel it is not enough. Carrying out such a task is not easy since I have much resistance from different quarters. Parents are resisting because of cultural taboos while the young people feel am stopping their source of income (prostitution). I am encouraged because the more I get involved in the struggle some elites are buying the idea. First and foremost I really need leadership skills to be developed so as to take the crusade ahead. In addition I need materials like films and documentaries as well as online resources to push the message across.
