Motherhood and Disability

It is my desire to journey with my initiative " motherhood and disability". I stared this initiative after discovering most mothers living with disabilities in Kenya die while giving birth. No one can tell us exactly why these vibrant mothers die or even tell us the cause.

I decided to come up with a Facebook page where I would share all the challenges mothers living with disability go through from pregnancy, giving birth and even through raising their children.

Some of the WWD women living with disabilities in Kenya are afraid of giving birth due to the rising number of WWDs while giving birth. To some extend, women living with disabilities are even encouraged NOT to give birth, which is according to me ' inhuman'. These women are humans just like the rest and they can give birth if they wand to. Infact, they make good mothers.

I also feel like the rest of the society need to be made aware of the challenges mothers with disability face in order to understand them and know how and where to offer help.

When I was pregnant, I faced and overcame some of the challenges. As the baby grew in my womb the weight was overwhelming me. I would frequently fall as I was too heavy to even carry myself. To date I still have some scars on my hands. Some people would not understand how a disabled person would be allowed to carry a baby.

From my experience, I learnt that a lot had to be done and explained to the society for some to learn and to unlearn the misconception surrounding Motherhood and Disability.

Kindly journey with me as we learn
