I'm Nang Grawng. I reside in the IDP camp of Ja Mai Kaung in Myitkyina, Kachin State. Over the past few years, I have noticed that the air in my environment is not as clean as it once was. In addition, farmers no longer receive productive crops due to deteriorating soil quality. I've observed an increase in the use of plastic in my refugee camp as a result of these issues.
In my camp, people have been using plastics daily without disposing of them in a systematic manner. Because plastic has been inexpensive, accessible, and simple to dispose of. As the population of the camp increases, plastic usage increases. Plastic could not be degradable in a short time. What’s more, the environment is worse due to the burning of plastics by people. Plastic can be found in rivers, oceans, and mountains. Anywhere you dig near my camp, you will find plastic instead of soil.
Therefore, I intend to engage in as many activities that promote the reduction of plastic consumption and the recycling of waste as possible. The plastic not only causes soil pollution, but also air pollution, which is detrimental to our health. We believe that our only responsibility is to place trash in the garbage can. We did not consider long-term repercussions and solutions. Therefore, I intend to conduct workshops to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic, trainings for recycling techniques, and campaigns to promote the use of biodegradable products. I hope you can assist me in establishing connections with organizations working on the plastic issue that can provide knowledge transfer, technical assistance, and management support.
