INITIATIVE

JUSTICE IN COURT FOR ABUSE VICTIMS

2000

PEOPLE IMPACTED

My previous update was to build my reputation as an opinion leader, researcher, expert, and influencer. Be the Voice for voiceless women of domestic Violence, speak out in events, conferences, live podcasts, etc., to deliver my message. I have already been invited to two live podcasts, spoken about my vision, presented my initiative, and received over 2000 views.

The viewers are proof that I have inspired and influenced an audience, which was my intention in my previous update. I have been invited next month to the International Book Awards of Hope Pyx Global Organization as an author survivor, and I am a finalist of the awards and a special guest to speak at the conference on abuse In Houston, TX. I intend to build a community of supporters, fundraisers, investors, and followers to support my vision.

Critical points for my message:

My proposal for change:

1. Require compensation paid to the victim by the perpetrator.

2. Provide an accessible representation of a lawyer to all victims.

3. Courts must sell immediately and distribute properties and require loans to be repaid equitably so that the victim does not continue to suffer secondary and repeated victimization from the abuser for many years, as happened in my case. Victims shouldn't have to lose all of their money and possessions when escaping an abusive relationship. Unfortunately, there are delays in the procedures either from the court or the Bank. Although this delay benefits the perpetrators, unfortunately, it keeps victims stuck and the continuation of their revenge against their victim.

4. Create a central database among the police, welfare system, NGO, and court for recording domestic Violence to protect the victims from secondary victimization in court. There is no monitoring of the perpetrators by authorities in Cyprus for previous violations. When abusers perpetrate Violence, we need all the documentation to protect victims from further abuse.

5. Create shelters with educational programs for perpetrators to learn about zero tolerance for abuse and the benefits of a healthy family.

6. Create an NGO for victims to report incidents and provide them with psychological support amid court proceedings until they recover from the cycle of Violence. This NGO will collect all their recordings to present them in court from the police, welfare, and NGOs. This way, there will be cross-checking for previous violations, valid documentation will not be hidden anymore but shown in court, and the abuser will finally be in jail because they should be there.

7. Educate children on violence-related issues to help change prevailing social norms.

8. The court trial should occur immediately, not as it is happening now but without further delays. But unfortunately, it takes many years for the final decision.

9. Victims want justice and protection from the law, court, and the state to escape Violence, and perpetrators should be in prison, not set free, paying a small amount for the repeated abuse they caused to their victims and clearing their records to set them free.

I also need to work on delivering my message to people with power in my country.

This is how power plays in my country:

Visible power: Decision makers and policymakers, MPs, Ministers, and party representatives.

Hidden power: Advocates of abuse, NGOs, networks, supporters, the power behind the scenes, and influencers demanding a seat.

Invisible power: My Voice, my research, my expertise, my involvement in the circle of Violence, and in court procedures as a victim and survivor and the injustice I faced in court, and my advocacy all are my invisible power.

What resistance will I have?

Convincing MPs, decision-makers, and policymakers to change the law and legislation and fight injustice in court. Instead, I will use my Voice as a public speaker and my expertise to build a community and work together on a common ground to fight injustice in court.

My next move: is to build a community or a movement to support my vision and join forces. I will share the invisible power I hold within by inviting others to join me and have a seat at the decision-making tables by sharing my skills, knowledge, expertise, and story of a child and spousal abuse. I will increase the number of people talking about this issue and work together toward the goal of Justice in Court. Advocacy for this cause is essential and must be loud enough to be heard to make its mark; persuading people and the community for my vision is necessary to amplify my message. The more participants, the merrier to put pressure on people of power so that they can make a change from inaction to action. Establishing a community or movement will help unify voices, call for change, and push decision-makers is essential. A shared vision, supporting a cause, and common goals are much better.

I will invite survivors, victims, NGOs, activists, and advocates through social media or in person, either in collaboration or call for partnerships, to introduce my vision and meet with leaders of organizations to gain contact. I will be intentional and authentic, create a portfolio of partners aligned with my goals, and create a strategy for outreach. I seek partners to amplify my call for action and push decision-makers and policymakers to change the law, policies, procedures, and injustice in court. I will meet with decision-makers to present my key points and my proposal for change.
