Kenya has called for regional and international initiatives aimed at ending the war in Sudan to be brought together under a common peace strategy, warning that multiple mediation tracks could weaken efforts to reach a political settlement to the conflict.
Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi, according to a report published by Kenya’s Mulembe News on Sunday, October 4, said existing diplomatic initiatives should be aligned around a common political strategy based on the Berlin Principles. He warned that multiple forums could allow the parties to the conflict to choose the tracks that best serve their interests, undermining collective peace efforts.
He called for an immediate, unconditional and sustainable cessation of hostilities, an end to external interference, and a halt to actions that fuel the war, deepen divisions or undermine peace initiatives.
The minister also called for sustained coordination of regional and international efforts, commending the work of the Quintet and the Quadrilateral Dialogue Group, as well as France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, for keeping the Sudan crisis high on the international agenda.
Mudavadi stressed that any future settlement must be based on an inclusive, Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process, with meaningful civilian participation in determining the country’s future.
He reaffirmed Kenya’s readiness to work with the United Nations, the African Union, IGAD, and international and regional partners to advance a political process leading to lasting peace in Sudan.
