It is amazing how useful the internet is and yet most people are unaware of the numerous benefits of the internet, my first encounter with the web was in 2006 when a friend of mine persuaded me to open an email account, I was reluctant but she insisted and went with me to the cyber café and we opened my first email, the yahoo. That became a medium where we exchanged emails during the long holidays and we send each other online greeting cards. That was all I knew. 2 years later in 2008, another friend of mine introduced me to Facebook, I recall I was not interested to join, but then we were graduating from the university and in order to stay in touch she convinced me it was fun and I joined Facebook. The only things I did online were just to chat with my friends, post pictures and all that. I never knew there was more to participating online than just chats with friends and families. As I began to participate I came to learn more about other sites, like blogs, twitter, LinkedIn, Skype and Google+. I signed up for them but I didn’t know how to use them until recently, though I do make some posts to my blog back then but I am not sure I know how to make people read them, for my LinkedIn and Google+, I am yet to fully participate in it, and through my involvement with World Pulse I came across some other women NGOs like Women Thrive, Nobel Women and I connected with them on Facebook and twitter. Also it was eye opening for me when we had Listeners Skype Call on World Pulse, I was so excited that day because I never saw a thing like that, since then I have known better about Skype Group calls. Recently again, I applied for the YALI Washington Fellowship and we have been having conversations online. A twitter chat was hosted by the YALI Network and for the first time yesterday I was involved in a twitter chat, I have always wondered what else people do on twitter except to follow others and to post tweets but now I know better, today I had another twitter chat by Women Thrive and it was another wonderful experience, even though my connection was going on and off due to the poor network but i learnt. It is interesting how fast I am learning and getting connected with women across the globe, it is even more interesting to see I can do most of my work online using my mobile phone. The internet is fun. I can’t but agree with Zephaniah from Pakistan that the Internet is a Magic Box!!!
