About Me:
Greetings Everyone
My name is Kirby and I am a student at Porltand State University, looking forward to graduating in June (2014) with a B.S. in Psychology, minoring in Women's Studies. I have been passionate about feminism since the issue of patriarchy was brought to light during my first year of college. Since this awakening moment, I have been immersed in the study of gender & sexualities in addition to feminist theory. Nonetheless, I have never really been able to apply myself and understand what it means to whole-heartedly be a feminist activist. I am looking forward to finally make the steps to push myself to become more involved and informed of such pressing issues. I understand that change means getting off of the sidelines and making the trek into unknown territory. Even though we've been taught to be silent our whole lives, this is not the answer. I feel that for those of us on the margins (due to race, gender, class, identity, etc.), it is our obligation to fight for our rights as human beings that SHOULD be treated equally. After all, the art of being in power and keeping it that way is to pretend like it (the position) doesn't exist. Speaking out makes you a target because the challenge of power is threatening. It may seem impossible to make a difference and to change all that we hope, but no matter how big, small, or far-reaching our efforts are, they still make a presence. Our voices are always heard somewhere, as long as we set them free.
With that being said, I am looking forward to this experience. I am excited to be here, and to share, listen, learn, and grow!
