Kasmin Fernandes celebrates her profound connection with the tapestry of India’s landscape.
In your embrace, I have found the courage to surrender to the uncertainties of life and trust in the benevolence of the universe.
Dearest Earth,
My soul communes with yours, dear Earth, for you are not merely a planet beneath my feet, but a sacred embodiment of existence itself. Through your lush landscapes and rugged terrains, I find solace and connection, transcending time and space, merging into the timeless now.
As an Indian woman, I have traversed your enchanting lands, from the verdant hills of the Western Ghats to the arid expanse of the Thar Desert. Your diverse landscape, woven with myriad hues, has mirrored the many facets of my own being. In the cool embrace of forests, I have found refuge and wisdom, the whispering leaves echoing the wisdom of sages and the rustling of stories untold. How you have blessed my soul with the sacred waters of your rivers! The Ganga, flowing gracefully through ancient lands, carries the essence and purity of devotion. Bathing in her waters, I am cleansed in body and spirit, dissolving the veils that separate me from the eternal presence of the now.
Through the cycles of seasons, I have witnessed the ebb and flow of life, embracing the impermanence of all things. Your rhythm, Earth, teaches me the art of acceptance and surrender, for in every loss lies the promise of renewal. As I sow seeds in the fertile soil of your belly, I am reminded of the infinite potential that lies within every soul, waiting to blossom in its due time. In the golden embrace of the setting sun over the vast Thar Desert, I have felt the oneness of all creation. The sands, kissed by the evening breeze, speak of the timeless dance of Shiva, the cosmic dancer. In this moment of profound stillness, I am no longer a separate entity but an integral part of the cosmic symphony.
Dear Earth, your sacred sites and ancient temples, rooted in this land's very soul, have embraced me. I have felt the energy of devotion, expressed through countless rituals and prayers, transcending the boundaries of religion. With each breath, I feel the gentle caress of your love, reminding me of the interconnectedness of all living beings. As I walk barefoot upon your soil, I am grounded in the present moment, where past and future dissolve into the eternal now.
In the quiet corners of my heart, I hold India as an ineffable mystery — a landscape of contradictions and harmonies. I write to you not as a traveler passing through your land but as one bewitched by the enigma you embody. As I traverse your vast expanse, from the serene backwaters of Kerala to the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, I find myself treading upon layers of history, culture, and spirituality that seem to stretch beyond the horizon. Your landscapes are like open books, revealing stories of ancient civilizations and wisdom that transcend time.
You are a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds that awaken every sense within me. The scent of incense wafting through temple courtyards, the melodic call of the muezzin, and the playful chatter of children in bustling bazaars all intertwine to create a symphony that resonates within my soul. Our people embody a hospitality as warm as the tropical sun that bathes your lands. From the distant villages to the vibrant cities, I have been embraced by your inhabitants' genuine smiles and kind gestures. In their eyes, I see a profound acceptance that celebrates the oneness of humanity.
Your spirituality is a gentle river that flows through every aspect of life. In the rituals of devotion at the ghats of Varanasi and the peaceful meditations of Dharamshala, I witness a profound longing for transcendence and a yearning to touch the divine. But amidst this enchanting tapestry, you are not immune to the harsh realities of the world. Poverty and plenty walk hand in hand, and your roads are lined with contrasts that challenge the mind and break open the heart. And yet, amid the chaos, there is an enduring resilience and a capacity to find joy in the simplest moments.
The animals that roam your expanse have shown me what love is about. I am forever indebted to the friendships I have cultivated with the animals on the farms and in the cities I have come in contact with. They have a deeper and stronger connection than any human connection I've had. Some of my best friends are dogs, cats, and birds; I wouldn't have it any other way. I feel in tune with their rhythms and emotions. There is no need for words when one has such a strong, energetic presence. They are powerful beings with an innate wisdom for living passed down from their ancestors. It is in their genetic code. They have no need for schools and institutions to teach them how to live in harmony with you. I hope to learn how to be one with you as the inhabitants of the animal world do. This is the wisdom that goes beyond rational thinking and the rules of society.
Earth, you have taught me the beauty of imperfection — the art of embracing the present, whether in the glory of a sunrise over the Red Fort or in the chaos of a bustling railway station. In your embrace, I have found the courage to surrender to the uncertainties of life and trust in the benevolence of the universe. I thank you, Earth, for the food and water you have blessed me with these 40 years of my life. I would not have been alive if not for the nourishing food grown on your soil.
Thank you, dear Earth, for the lessons you have etched into my soul. I shall forever cherish the time we spent together. May we, as humans, awaken to the consciousness of our inherent unity with you, dear Earth, and with each other. For in loving you, we discover the path to loving ourselves and all beings.
With boundless love and gratitude,
Kasmin Fernandes
