Sharing information is double edged weapon, personally i prefere having public profile however i think that its only risk can be being impersonated. I used to put a whatsapp profile photo which is so normal and all my friends and all people do it.
The problem started when my mother's phone was stolen and someone got into my photos and tried to impersonate me, they even sent to my mother's other contacts as if they are me !! The good thing was that they were contacting people from their phone number! Later on, they were exposed and it was known that its not me who use this number! You know a phone call would be enough to ensure the voice of the perosn or a video call to ensure their identity!
For me when anyone text me i google search their images to ensure their identity. Unfortunately not all people do that and even if we googled images from private profiles it will never be found!
That's why i believe that it is better to have public photos.
Not all information is better to be shared however if you are online so you should dare to be present. I believe that the only risk is when you get hacked however if you have strong passwords and linking with your phone number so that you can save it, will not be a big deal.
