Hello Book Clubs members. It has been some time since last I posted and must admit to being pre-occupied with a health issue. Some months back I awoke one morning to find that vision in my right eye was quite blurry and dim. After doctor consults, some strange happenings that dramatized our current health care here in America, I went to the famous Mayo Clinic. Diagnosed with \"branch retinal vein occlusion\" with increased macular edema, treatments began at Mayo. I am very happy to report that I've regained about 60% vision and the prognosis for nearly complete return of my sight is likely.
Anyone would be alarmed, of course, at loss of site so suddenly and as an avid reader and artist, I was in a panic to put it mildly! Reading was difficult in the first weeks, but I learned to do so with one eye closed. Given that, reading a very inspiring book written by a woman of 95 years was quite worth the struggle to focus with one eye!
\"The Next American Revolution,\" is written by Grace Lee Boggs, with a forward by Danny Glover. (http://www.amazon.com/The-Next-American-Revolution-Twenty-First/dp/05202...)
Grace Lee Boggs, has been an activist since a young woman and is the recipient of numerous humanitarian and achievement award for her human rights, civil rights, peace and justice work. Her book, citing her own experience and learning by doing, also gives us a historical look at the actual path of human rights in America. Through Boggs, activist in so many movements, we see the back story of the struggles of the poor, abuses of the powerful, and the political bends and sways. But most important, Boggs shares her learned insight, conviction too, that only people individually and collectively make change happen. This book is actually quite hopeful. Boggs tells us that we much create a more sustainable way of life in every aspect and she gives ideas and solutions already established for creating alternative modes of work, politics, and human interaction--that will bring healing and meaning to our lives.
