Homophobia in blossom: Ukraine Celebrates Day Against Homophobia with discrimination

Even European Union cannot force Ukraine to adopt the law which protects sexual minorities from discrimination. It was the reaction of the deputies on the appeal of Amnesty International to Ukrainian authorities to adopt legislation which combats discrimination against sexual minorities and ensures the adequate police protection of the gay pride parade in Kyiv on May 25.

By the way, Ukraine is one of those countries where gay parades never happened. Last year it was canceled because of tons of threats towards organizers.

What makes the situation more ridiculous, deputies in all seriousness began to discuss the other draft of law – about criminalizing of the \"propaganda of homosexuality\".

Desperate to receive any adequate measures from Ukrainian politicians, the Amnesty International made the report \"Nothing to be proud of: Discrimination against LGBTI people in Ukraine\", which exposes endemic discrimination by officials and members of the public towards representatives of sexual minorities. It says that the Ukrainian legislation doesn't provide an adequate protection and sometimes violates the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Ukraine is unable to guarantee the protection of their principal freedoms. The right for freedom from the discrimination, the right to security of person, integrity and the right to freedom of assembly.

Homosexuality is a sensitive issue for Ukrainian people. Mass media prefers to avoid it or presents in negative light, people leave only humiliating comments, politicians no want to open their minds and understand that all people are different. And some of them didn’t choose to be not like others. They suffer because of this, and understanding that they are face to face with their problems, and no one will protect them – is not the best scenario they could choose.

We must accept life as it is. We cannot change nature. And we must remember one simple truth: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Respect, trust and love – these things are essential to deserve to be called a human.
