grassroot women and vulnerability - a sorry state.

advocacy work for women's rights has opened my eyes to dig deeper and seek to understand the challenges that women face at grassroot level. As a freelance journalist and paralegal, i took time to visit some parts of rural Zimbabwe where one lady chronicled to me the history of her 4 year old daughter. she explained to me that she consented to unprotected sex with a village local leader so that she could be written on the list of beneficiaries for food aid that was being offered by a Non Governmental Organisation. there was drought and hunger that year to the extend that she says thats how she managed to survive.Currently the lady is doing small scale garden projects to fend for her family. Her experience broke my heart because she was herself a deserving beneficiary but was sexually exploited. i got to understand the core need for educational and economic empowerment for women. what about her health? We really need to work towards a better future for the girls and women in this world.
