I am devastated to hear that a young girl has taken her life because she was shamed for period stains on her clothing.

I am reposting @officialjanetmbugua here:

Allegedly, she had soiled (stained) her dress because she was on her period and didn’t have access to a sanitary pad, so she bled through her dress. Her teacher, a female, allegedly told her to leave the classroom because she was ‘dirty’. She then went home, and took her life.

As much as the Government of Kenya passed a law in 2017 that should see girls in public schools get free sanitary pads;

Today and for the next few days I will #GoRedForJackline so that we can push for the policy which is being revised, to be ratified, made known to the public and implemented. That the policy should include educating TEACHERS on how to handle menstruating students. That boys are informed so that they become allies. That parents and houses of worship are also empowered to be champions. That we can all take up a responsibility in normalizing the conversation around periods. Because folks, it is bloody normal, pun intended! ✊ May

It’s so important - for all of us - that we are educated to see periods in a positive way. Only when we understanding that periods are a natural and normal part of life, can we practice good menstrual health and challenge the stigma and break those period taboos.
