Giants

The base of a grandmother tree, roots reaching deep into the earth

grandmother tree

Giants

We live among women so brave

Giants on this earth

Whose determination to protect land

And the people growing food

Surpasses fear and ridicule

Surpasses being satisfied

With lives of comfort.

Arundhati Roy

Who did not stand by silently

While Coca Cola robbed her homeland

Of its water base.

Vandana Shiva

In all her fierce and radiant beauty

Creating a movement of people

Guarding the sanctity of seed

Against Cargill, and Monsanto

And all the madmen whose greed

Demands ownership of plants and land

She will not stand for this.

Wangari Maathai

Who saw her homeland de-forested

Blowing away in the wind

Began a movement of women

Forbidden to own

The land they loved

Planted trees, to save that land

To save the Earth.

In defiance

Beaten and jailed she is unstoppable

Each seed saved carefully,

Each garden grown,

Each small farm cared for and loved

The forests re-emerging.
