Gender Discrimination & the negative impact on the Girl Child

Girl child descrimination should be discouraged in our society

My name is Folakemi Christiana, I am from Nigeria and a Yoruba by tribe. I came from a family of seven (7) girls, and am the third child. The gender discrimination of having seven girls caused a whole it of issues in my life and family and this seriously affected my education and that of my siblings. This was as a result of gender based descrimination because the extended family interference on my mother not having a male child causes a lot of problems for her and we the girls also partake of the issue. My mother was faced with severe domestic violence and this she suffered for years. Based on my experience on the discrimination of girl child and how it often times causes domestic violence and sometimes the girl child may be left alone to cater or fend for herselves and this can result to girl child abuse and molestations. My life as a case study. My experience through life journey has promted me to start an initiative on how to educate our people especially those in the rural areas not to see girl child as a liability or a mistake but rather an asset and to stop this descrimination against girl child. Secondly, to identify women that are going through domestic violence and interact with them and find a way to assist and empower them. Thirdly I want to also encourage young girls that have been abandoned as a result of gender Discrimination and those ones that has suffered abuse or molestation as a result of this evil called "gender decrimination" Thank you.
