Village Solar targets underserved communities in rural areas of Malawi who currently rely on kerosene or battery-powered torches for lighting. These communities often face high household energy costs and limited access to reliable electricity, which can hinder educational and economic development. Village Solar aims to provide affordable and high-quality solar energy solutions to these communities through its unique business model that utilizes VSLAs as distribution partners.
The use of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) as agents for distribution is a unique aspect of Village Solar's business model. By utilizing community-based agents who are familiar with the local culture and customs, Village Solar is able to provide a more personalized and tailored customer service experience. The agents can answer questions and provide education on the benefits of clean energy solutions, as well as offer guidance on financing options that are being offered.
Approximately 16 million people (85% of the population) have no access to electricity in Malawi. The Government has set a target to increase grid access rate from 15 % to 30% by 2030 to achieve the Agenda for Sustainable Development (ASD). However, the current annual population growth rate of 2.8 % is outstripping the pace of electrification. Malawi’s heavy reliance on hydro electricity is also often constrained by drought and low water levels resulting in insufficient power for its existing customers. These conditions provide potential for off-grid solutions that can address the remaining gap (70%) to achieve universalnenergy access over this period
The main goal of the Village Solar Social Enterprise is to improve access to clean and affordable energy for households, businesses, and public institutions in rural areas.
The specific objectives of the project include:
1. To provide access to electricity for households, small businesses, and community facilities in rural areas.
2. To improve the quality of life and economic opportunities for people living in rural areas.
3. To promote sustainable development and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
4. To create positive social impact in the communities the enterprise serves.
Target Beneficiaries:
The target beneficiaries of the project are households, small businesses, and community facilities in rural areas that lack access to reliable and affordable electricity.
The following activities will be undertaken to achieve the project objectives:
1. Develop and implement a marketing and outreach strategy to raise awareness about the enterprise and its services.
2. Train VSLAs to install and maintain solar energy systems, and provide customer service and support.
3. Set up small-scale solar energy systems in households, small businesses, and community facilities, and provide ongoing maintenance and repair services.
4. Provide training and education on the use of solar energy systems to VSLAs.
