END Violence against Women (EVAW)

By resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, the General Assembly designated 25th November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem.

Recognizing that the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women provides an opportunity to bring global activism around women’s rights to the forefront, We organized a one day peaceful demonstration while keeping in line with the theme for this year, “Human Rights for Women: Human Rights for All”. Approximately 45 (22F, 23M) individuals from different CSOs & NGOs participated. The National & International Media Representatives gave the coverage to this event as well.

People were of the view that Violence against women continues to be a pervasive human rights violation that affects women around the world. The experience of violence by women is shaped by the intersection of gender with factors such as race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, culture, religion, age, class, sexual identity, disability and citizenship status. The prevalence of violence against women constitutes a global human rights and public health crisis and is an obstacle to equality, development, security, peace and women’s empowerment.

Demands for Action:

• Government should treat women violence as a serious crime on a par with assaults in other contexts, and in a way that protects and supports women who report it.
• Government should work on promulgating a uniform, national judicial order having set standards, gender equality and justice.
• Ensure strict implementation of such legislation and bring to justice those who breach/ violate these laws.
• Government should ensure the elimination of all acts of discrimination against women by persons, organizations or enterprises and incorporating the principle of equality of men and women in our legal system and abolish all discriminatory laws and adopt appropriate ones prohibiting discrimination against women.
