Embracing Autism

In 2017, InspireIT launched STEM Club Project, which encourages young girls in primary, and secondary schools in Nigeria to learn digital skills, basic programming skills, and build strong foundation in science subjects. Since it was launched, we have reached out to more than 2225 girls in various primary and secondary schools across Nigeria. Also, more than 150 girls and women interested in STEM have also been mentored through InspireIT.

Due to the many challenges faced by children with autism and the discrimination a lot of them face in Nigeria, InspireIT is expanding its STEM club project to include children with autism, teaching them digital skills and coding skills. Children with autism in Nigeria are often seen as “curse, taboo, or imbecile.” Often times, these discrimination do not help with their self esteem and they tend to withdraw from participating in activities both with other children and within their community

We are grateful to World Wide Web Foundation and through their support, InspireIT plans to reach additional 24 schools in the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Even if you show kindness or as much as smile to an autistic child, you would have contributed to making the world a better place. As Seth Godin says “When enough people care about autism or diabetes or global warming, it helps everyone, even if only a tiny fraction actively participate.”
