Today's program base on donating menstrual kits to the vulnerable population of Tole camp, found in the South west region of Cameroon was a success. From studies,i realised that Tole camp is a very vulnerable place Characterized by Northeners with a Muslim back ground. It habours over 120women who are Muslims and christians living in a very horable condition. There have no source of electricity supply, water and health facilities. The people live on a minimum wage, and the camp is characterized by a high poverty level. They excrete in bushes because the sanitary conditions of the toilets are deplorable. The women and young girls sometimes use leaves, backs of trees and old clothes to hold their flow. The girl's experience a high poverty level that makes them go after bike riders and any one who cares just to meet up to thier daily needs , not to talk of when under thier monthly flow. Resources were mobilized to reach out to over 120 vulnerable women and girl. My team and i could feel the pain and lost dignity of this vulnerable ones. As there prayed, and blessed us for the gifts, food and menstrual pads donated. So heart touching was the story of a young girl narraing the living conditions of the people. She said the food we have brought will enable them change thier menu for the day, because the only food there are used to eating is casava, sweet potatoes and corn. The Fulani women eat raw uncooked rice because of no food to eat. Some eat unripe mangoes and salt for a meal. So food to them is a luxury not to talk of affording a menstrual pad.
Apart from the donations, we equally had lectures on how to use a menstrual pad, and how to keep good body hygiene during menstruation. The women were equally encouraged not to give up, but to be strong. Because having a period flow is not a Taboo, but a thing of pride. The women where also encouraged to learn hand crafts and skill in other to combat period poverty.
To this regard, the women unanimously agreed to learn how to fry snacks, make beats and detergents because it can raise them quick or fast income for livelihood support.
After listening to the proposals made , we realized that this ideas are sustainable idea in the sense that, learning skills will help the women to be able to carry out income generating activities that will enable them buy their own menstrual pads and became economically empowered to support themselves and empower others in Future.
We are therefore , planning to embark on another visit to empower this women will skills and crafts. I belive this actions will go a long way to empower this women economically and will end period poverty, because, if the women are empowered, with skills there will be able to raise money to buy thier own menstrual pads and period poverty will be completed erased.
I believe if sustainable projects like these ones are raised to train and empower women and girls, then period poverty will be a thing of the past.
Again, educating the girl child is very important in combating period poverty. However, for girls to manage thier periods safely, hygienically and without shame, they need a basic understanding of what menstruation is and how to handle it. Unfortunately millions of girls lack access to even mininal information on menstruation. Therefore girls need to be educated on menstruation🩸 changes that occurs during puberty and various types of menstrual products.
Am therefore here to empower girls to make choices for themselves and challenge menstrual myths and stigma. This will enable girls to gain self confidence engage in discussions, workshops and educative talks that supports one another.
