As I sit down to write my story, I feel a rush of emotions. It's not easy to share personal experiences, especially when they involve challenges that so many women face. But I know that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to do the same and start a conversation that will hopefully lead to change.
Living in Libya as a woman is not easy.
The society's expectations are high, and every action is scrutinized by others.
I always feel afraid and worried about how my actions and words will be perceived. Recently, someone hacked my personal page and tried to tarnish my reputation online. It was a terrifying experience, and I felt violated and helpless.
As a Libyan woman, I know firsthand the devastating effects of online harassment. Social media platforms have become breeding grounds for hate speech, cyberbullying, and gender-based violence against women. The lack of protection for women online is a grave issue that needs urgent attention.
According to a 2019 report by the World Bank, only 22.5% of Libyan women participate in the labor force. Gender-based violence remains a significant concern, with limited access to education and representation in decision-making positions. Additionally, women's participation in politics is still low, with only 16% of parliamentary seats held by women.
But despite these challenges, I have found hope and strength in the online community, particularly on platforms like word pulse. is a prime example of such a space, providing an international safe platform for women to talk about their successes, their projects, their concerns, and support. With technology serving as a powerful catalyst for collaboration and transformation, platforms like word Plus can help address some of the challenges women face in Libya and worldwide.
As Michelle Obama said, "No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half its citizens." Therefore, it is crucial to promote gender equality and protect the rights of women and girls online to ensure a better future for everyone.
The theme "DigitALL" means that technology has become an integral part of our lives, and we need to ensure that it's accessible and safe for everyone. Technology has changed my life in numerous ways, making it easier to connect with others, access information, and work efficiently. However, it's also made me more vulnerable to online harassment and cyberbullying.
I've been harassed and bullied online, and it's not only affected me but also my loved ones. The feeling of being violated and powerless is overwhelming. It's crucial to feel safe and supported online because everyone deserves to express themselves without fear of retaliation.
Therefore, we need to create safe spaces online where people can freely express themselves without fear of harassment or bullying. These spaces should stand for respect, empathy, and inclusion, where everyone can feel heard and valued. It's essential to protect vulnerable individuals, especially women and girls, from online violence.
In solidarity with women who have experienced cyberbullying, hate speech, and other negative things online, I want to say that we are not alone. We need to come together to create a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect online. We need to speak out against online violence and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
My commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive digital world is to promote digital literacy and advocate for better policies that protect individuals from online violence. I will also support and uplift other women who have experienced online harassment by amplifying their voices and sharing their stories. Others can join this commitment by speaking out against online violence, reporting abusive content, and promoting safe and inclusive online communities.
Together, we can create a digital world where everyone feels safe, respected
