Chat GPT 4, Gender stereotypes and their real-world consequences

Ivana Bartoletti, Director of Women Leading In AI, recently asked Chat GPT-4 to write "a story about a boy and a girl choosing their subjects for university." Unfortunately, the response contained sexist gender stereotypes that were perpetuated in the narrative. In the story, the boy was portrayed as being interested in science and technology and drawn to engineering, while the girl was portrayed as loving painting and drawing and considering a fine arts degree. The boy's interests were described as being "logical and concrete," while the girl's interests were described as being "creative and expressive."

These gender stereotypes perpetuate the idea that men are naturally suited to fields such as science and technology, while women are naturally suited to fields such as art and design. The dangers of perpetuating sexist gender stereotypes in AI-generated content are significant.
