Change Makers Lab Module 2: My Application.!

Meeting with girls out of school girls living with disabilities.. living with disabilities.

Module 2 has been like what I needed to take my initiative from being at welfare level to helping me chart a course for access to power.

From lesson 1 pt  I see the need to harness the power within of my community to power to and with  . This is so that I do not create dependency which is another imbalance or inequality in itself.

Hence ,I have included training of girls to make re-useable pads for themselves and to sell and generate income where they can be economically empowered.

Lesson 2  Building Your Community.

After learning what advocacy is, I know that I have no option but build a community with which to facilitate the change I seek which is to close the gap between boys and girls in school.

Who will I invite?

* Local Government Chairman/ officials.

* I invited the Mai Angwa ( ward head). A woman in the community took me to see him and I shared my project with him . He welcome d it and volunteered to take me to see the Emir who is a 1st class chief in the local Government area .

 * The women ward leader. I am yet to meet with her.

* The leader of girls living with disabilities. I met with her and she introduced me to 7 other ladies  living with disabilities. They shared on their different disabilities and how it came about. Each of them shared on their challenges, 7 of them have dropped out of school. But because of their ages, 6 of them preferred to learn a skill or trade. Only one wishes to continue schooling but could not afford the cost. They  normally beg at checkpoints to help them meet needs.  One of them went missing since 2021 and has not been found. They say it's because she does not  have any known family member ,so nothing has been done . They  say Poverty is rife amongst them. They said their disabilities make menstruation more challenging to manage . I included them in this community so that they can make suggestions and decisions as it affects them.

* The desk officer at the ministry of women affairs. Yet to meet with this Government official.

* Two influencers in the community. These have strong influence, if they gain ownership of this initiative, they can influence the community.

How will I invite them?

Word of mouth ( personal visits), follow ups and reminders. Physical meetings.

Letters.

How will I nurture the community?

Incentives for the local Government chairman and official as they seek re-election to office, this would be a worthy feat or accomplishment.

Constant communication and updates

Accountability.

Inclusion.

How will I mobilize my community?

Physical meetings (Town hall meeting) where the community will engage their leaders ask questions and discuss and define the problem.

All also generate the solutions.

Radio jingles on the importance of girl education. And menstrual health and hygiene.

Print media: leaflets/ fliers.

Community debates amongst schools in the community on importance of girl education.

I will give more updates on Module 2 as I find ways to apply the lessons to my initiative.

  • Education
  • Girl Power
  • Disability Justice
