Celebrating IDGC22

While treating module 2 of the Change Makers' lab, in drawing up my SWOT analysis, the international Day for the Girl Child  was a major opportunity.

This is because we all know that on that day the world focuses on the girl child. It amplifies the voice and challenges of the girl. Seeks to present her with hope and opportunities and brings it within her reach.

Such an important day was an opportunity Life Aid decided to take on. After having met to introduce my initiative to the Local Government authority , through the local Government social welfare office, we came up with the list of  10 out of school girls living with disabilities to empower. Though after consulting with the girls, they preferred to enroll into a sewing class for 6 months.

Funds were raised to get reusable pads for at least 200 girls, but that target was not reached.

Life Aid was able to commemorate International Day for the girl child on 15th of October due to issue of venue., But the spark was not lost in anyway as the main chant during the program was " digital generation, our generation" in line with the theme for this year's celebration.

In attendance were government officials,  NGO's, two community influencers and girls.

The keynote speaker set the place on fire as she charged the girls to embrace technology and get digital skills.

She encouraged them to keep dreaming and water their dreams as they avail themselves to learn skills and refuse gender roles  and discrimination imposed by the society. She used herself as example, she had been refused by her family to study law, but she persisted and today she practices law. The speaker made a huge impression on the girls.

The tailoring/ sewing class was flagged off as the girls with disabilities were given their admission letters into the sewing classes paid by life Aid.

Reusable pads were distributed to all the girls present for the program.

The IDGC22 presented us with opportunities to reach girls with sanitary products so that they don't miss school because of lack of sanitary products.

Advocacy was made to the social welfare unit to strengthen modalities to close the gap between boys and girls in school.

Funds were raised to help pay school fees for girls who are on our sponsorship in school.
