The likelihood of successful career prospects for learners from impoverished schools is very low
Many high school learners in rural areas and townships in South Africa face significant challenges when it comes to career development.
These learners often lack access to mentoring, career counselling, and other resources that can help them make informed decisions about their future. Additionally, the traditional school system is designed to keep learners in school until they complete their high school education, but there are limited career development systems in place to inspire learners' career choices beyond that point. As a result, many learners end up studying subjects for the sake of having a career without any ambition or inspiration.
Research and statistics suggest that while many people do end up in careers they enjoy, there are also a significant number of individuals who feel unfulfilled or dissatisfied with their jobs. Factors such as financial stability, societal expectations, and lack of career guidance can all contribute to individuals choosing careers that may not align with their interests or passions. However, it's important to note that career satisfaction is subjective and can vary greatly from person to person.
One study that highlights the challenges faced by South African youth in their career development is "Career Development of South African Youth: A Qualitative Study" by Mokhele and others. This study revealed that limited access to career guidance and information, lack of resources and opportunities, and societal and cultural factors all influence career choices among South African youth. The study also emphasized the importance of providing career guidance and support to youth, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to help them make informed career decisions and achieve their goals.
I spoke to a number of High School learners from a township in Gauteng Province, Lotus Gardens, in South Africa about their careers prospects, a majority of them are not certain what they would be doing post matric (High School), and a number of them cited lack of career options and inspiration on their side. One teacher assistant in one of the schools in the area, said, “A lot of learners do not even know why they are in schools and what they would like to study post matric because the only careers they know about, i.e teaching, law, medicine, do not inspire them anymore, they need to learn about something different, and unfortunately they lack exposure to possible career options and mentoring". This teacher assistant’s sentiments are shared by a number of education experts, educators and parents in many of the townships around south Africa.
In an effort to address these challenges, a career development project called Beyond 2030 has been initiated. This project aims to gather resources to mentor and coach learners from underprivileged communities in various schools. The goal is to provide learners in rural and township areas with access to career development opportunities that will help them transition into their potential career prospects. However, this project will require support in terms of resources and sponsorships in order to take off the ground.
