Me Volunteering in Sanitation and Menstrual Health Campaign at School.
Her periods date is nearing. She may menstruate between 21 to 35 days and her periods lasts 5 to 7 days. She is worried a lot and the worries is same every month. Those five days she is treated as impure and not allowed to enter kitchen, touch things and live in separate room and use worn out clothes and beddings. She is excluded from many aspects of socio-cultural life. It is a five days seclusion. Thinking it as a taboo and believing in the myths, she failed to understand and manage menstrual health properly.
The above deep -rooted taboo passed down through generations in many religions / homes. Being the victim( fearing the elders) of the same i feel awful but I stopped it in later stage of my life when I built my own home/family. ( Every single initiative starts at home in breaking myths). I dispelled the myths and persuaded myself with proper knowlege about menstrual myths and facts.
With less awareness about PMS ( Premenstrual syndrome) , I suffered for many years with emotional instability. Now with proper therapy and techniques I am handling PMS by believing/accepting PMS is real and giving extra care and kindness to myself before and during periods.
Furthermore I educated my Mens at home especially my adult son about periods by promoting open conversation and factual education at home. And the impact of mental and physical health. And also extended my help in breaking the myths by volunteering in Menstrual health campaign.
Menstruation is natural, healthy, and nothing to be embarrassed about. By separating myths from facts, we can help women and girls manage their periods with dignity and confidence.
Let’s replace stigma with knowledge, silence with conversations, and myths with facts, because menstrual health is human health.

Ms. Sindhu.
