Are we addicted to sodium?



According to a recent report from the CDC, nearly 70 percent of adults in the United States are getting far more sodium from our diets than is recommended. Why? Compared to previous generations, we eat more restaurant meals and takeout and much more processed food, and all are likely to contain more sodium than home-cooked meals. In fact, in just one day, the average American consumes nearly 3,500 milligrams of sodium, 50 percent more than the recommended amount, according to report coauthor Nora Keenan, Ph.D., an epidemiologist with the CDC's division for heart disease and stroke prevention.
