An interesting physics problem: driving a car polluting the less

\"STAY HOME!!!\"
No question, the man was shouting at me!
OK, my driving license was fresh, and the curves tight enough to make my non aggressive driving style even more defensive...
But: what is the man's comment was general, and not personal?
We usually don't have access to scaring information about how much a car pollutes. But, as we gain even a little bit of it we are led to a really surprising world.
On the other side: given all internal combustion engines pollute the environment massively, is it some way to reduce this impact by adopting a sensible driving and car-choosing habit?
This is a physics problem!
For high school, mainly. But I can't exclude some brave teacher may use it also in secondary school.
Have fun!
