An Evidence-based Child Safety Approach

Body Safety Coach, Henrietta Nonye Odey teaching body safety education

It happened right in front of me.

This child I've been teaching 'body safety.

With permission from her parents.

That evening, I was still in their house after my session.

Daddy! Daddy!! This 3-year-old cried out as she heard his voice.

Her Dad lifted her into his arms while singing her praises.

They chatted for a few minutes before he asked her to go get him something from his room.

As she made to walk out, he slapped her buttocks, gently.

She turned around and warned him, never to do that again and reported him to her Mum.

Of course, I gave her Mum the nudge to reprimand her husband in front of their daughter.

She left for her room shortly...

Me: You don't want people slapping her buttocks, right? Then why do it to her?

Man: It was just a slight tap, I was playing.

Me: Well, you don't play that way, it's inappropriate and you are confusing her.

I am teaching her about consent, boundaries and her right to decide what happens to her body and then you do this.

Man: I'm sorry, I just believed it was harmless, but I understand how wrong I was, now. It won't happen again and I'll apologize to her when she comes out.

Me: Good. You both must be good examples and behave towards her the right way a child should be treated.

Not only would it help strengthen my teachings but she would know right and wrong without any difficulty.

As her TRUST NETWORK, a lot is expected from you. You shouldn't be working against her safety but for it, at all times.

I was done for the day but...

That three-year-old girl standing up for herself like that was the sweetest thing to watch. It made my day.

As a Body safety coach, I'm delighted when kids answer questions satisfactorily. It helps me determine how much they have understood.

When I hear from their parents or guardians, that they are implementing what they learned I'm fulfilled.

But when I'm opportune to see them in action, it's a gift I'll cherish forever.

I remain Henrietta Nonye Odey the most passionate Body Safety Coach, you'd ever know 😊
